Bregðask returned to the Harvard clan house after dropping off Lea, Su Jin, and Jyoti at the town inn. Hilda was just setting the table and keen to hear about his strange adventure. Her expression had been warm and proud of his actions, but he’d seen the anger in her eyes at the thought of the three women being in danger because of the goðar. She packed up a basket and went to go visit the women the next morning with Bregðask. Óðinndøgr passed practically without him noticing, as did the school day on Þórrdøgr. Before he knew it, he (more…)
Bregðask leaned against the post of an awning as Hilda shopped for things for dinner just as she always had every Týrdøgr afternoon for as long as he remembered. The marketplace was housed in the island’s main square, and just like every Týrdøgr in the late winter just after skammdegí was ending, Svein was delivering the address that Bregðask had written just a few days prior about how they fared and what everyone needed to know for the upcoming summer. Around him were people of Calder and people from beyond the shores of the archipelago with cameras, apparently fascinated by (more…)
It was dawn, and Bregðask hadn’t slept a moment. He sighed softly and put his head down on his working table so the words of the speech he was working on were nothing more than letters stretching out into the unintelligible. It was cold as the heart of winter hadn’t quite let go and wouldn’t for another few months. Skammdegí was over, so there was light in the sky during the day, but not enough to warm the air. It wouldn’t matter. The annual average temperature on Calder ranged from a frigid negative ten degrees Celsius to a balmy ten (more…)
On the island of Calder, names were chosen based on the time of the year a person is born. If your birthday coincided with someone of your family line, you were named in their honor. Unfortunately, the closest ancestor in a young man’s line is a name that will haunt him for his entire life and all the superstition that came with it. No matter how his mentor and father figure claims that it is a name to be worn with pride, he knows that the look in his father’s eyes, the hilmir of their island and leader of the Rekkr Vinfengi, is everything but pride.
He only had to hold out until he turned twenty years old so he could be legally old enough to travel beyond the archipelago and maybe leave the horrible name behind.
Unfortunately, nothing is ever that easy.

The sky was dark with the beginning and end of the sense of peace the planet had enjoyed for centuries. Thunder hummed on the brink of ripping open the clouds, and lightning twisted, scurrying through the skies as if hurrying to catch a seat to watch the match. Evey duel had always been this way, and now, their usually joyous capital turned somber and dim-eyed to the center of the great stadium of past kings. On one side sat the chosen king and his family. His wife and three sons were there to support him and pay witness to their (more…)

It was already late June now but felt like the last days of winter rather than spring. Juliette wondered if the dredges of winter had followed them all the way from the Black Forest and decided that today was the day to have its last assault before giving way to the summer’s warmth. Couldn’t it have picked another day? she thought angrily, For goodness sake. She didn’t exactly have clothes to last the entire spring, but the one late spring or early summer dress she’d bought with the intention of wearing it in Paris to procure a job wouldn’t stand (more…)
